Jo’s misfiring, Yakubu’s heart isn’t in it, and lord knows where the injured kids are. The need for another front man to partner Louis Saha is bordering on urgent, and today’s link with Landon Donovan has been met with a mixed reaction. Is Donovan an American eagle who can poach some goals for the Blues, or is he an overrated teenage dirtbag who is better off not boarding the plane?

The spat between Donovan and Beckham made continental headlines, yet despite Beckham’s reaffirmation to the LA Galaxy cause, his hard work in training and effort to get Galaxy to the American league’s play off final – as well as his international commitments, Donovan is still painted as the good guy, albeit stateside.

There is an air of hypocrisy about his argument with Beckham. His broadside came, don’t forget, after an ill-fated stint in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, where he scored a whopping zero goals in open league play. Beckham’s trip to America has obvious financial benefits, but there is no doubt that his presence in America has raised the league’s global awareness which can only be good news for the game in the long term.

Donovan’s careerism seems a little more selfish. Why take yourself out of your homeland’s shop window months before a World Cup to play in the best league on the planet? That may sound like a dumb question, but if his stint at Goodison Park is as ill-fated as his barn-door days at Bayern, it’s a calculated risk that can only do more personal harm than good.

Perhaps it’s unfair to tear a strip off Donovan before he even buys his plane ticket. Let’s not forget that Cahill had a surly and aggressive reputation during his time at Millwall, which has been forgotten about through a dynamic Everton career and heartfelt displays for the club. Donovan will also have the luxury of international teammate Tim Howard, who will help him bed into the North West quickly (with Clint Dempsey only a seven-hour drive away).

The move could potentially be a fresh start for both parties involved, and Donovan could possibly fire Everton into another consecutive European competition. Maybe he can bring some of his American franchise magic with him, turning Goodison Park into the Echo Bowl Arena…

Also, he used to be married to Bianca Kajlich who is fit as.

When it comes to the spat between Donovan and Beckham…you don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.

In fact, when it comes to Donovan, you don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. If this deal comes to fruition, your eyes will be opened.

seems to me, mr taylor, that you are pre-judging the lad without any reasonable cause ,,,,,,,, or are you just a fan of david beckham?.

  4. Blue says:

How can you judge a guy before he pulls on a Blue shirt??

Christ, and I thought Kopites were bitter whingers…………..

An extremely illconsidered and poorly judged article. Yak’s coming back from a career threatening injury and its been stated multiple times that his tendon will need time to become elastic again and for him to be in top shape.

The points about Donovan border on character assassination and have zero weight. Its a three month loan. Not a 30million transfer. Get some perspective.

I live in California and see most games that Donovan plays on TV. He will be a flop in the PL because he has no guts. He’s fine if he is given space and time and has a decent first touch, but he’s easily subdued with a firm tackle or two. A bit of a wimp, actually.

Well his commitment has shown ‘MLS Watcher’ up. Are you sure it’s the MLS you’ve been watching? You don’t seem to know much!! And just the 1 point to the idiot who wrote this article, if it takes you 7 hours to drive from Liverpool to London, I suggest you learn to drive or buy a map book.
