David Moyes has dampened down expectations around Goodison Park despite Saturday’s 1-0 win over Wigan at The DW Stadium.
Tim Cahill was the Toffees’ hero as he leapt like a salmon to head home Leighton Baines’ late corner and understandably fans have begun to think about the Europa League.
Saturday’s hard-fought win was no more than Moyes’ men deserved after the linesman inexplicably ruled out Marouane Fellaini’s goal after he turned home Cahill’s pull back from a yard out.
It could not have been offside because Cahill played the ball backwards, however it didn’t matter as Cahill did the business with a trademark header and the Toffees hung on as Charles N’Zogbia struck the bar with a rasping effort in stoppage time.
It was Everton’s third win on the spin in the Premier League so their poor start to the season is long forgotten and the fans once again have got Europe on their minds.
However Moyes has refused to get carried away.
He said: “We’ll wait and see where it goes, but who knows?
“We hoped we would have been in and around it before the season started, but the start we had to the season probably makes it a real long shot.
“We can’t be aiming too high too soon.
“We’ll wait and see how we go over the coming months and we have a tough month to come.”
Everton’s Premier League odds suggest they are in with an outside chance of a European place, but they will face tough competition from the likes of Birmingham City.
Meanwhile, horse racing fans are looking ahead to this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup which will see Denman and Kauto Star do battle in what promises to be a classic.
