So here we are almost 6 months to the day since our last post and we’re writing about a Capital One Cup Semi Final First Leg – wow that’s a mouthful.

The last time we posted the season was yet to start, and this semi final was not ever really considered a possibility given our almost guaranteed failure in the competition in recent years.

Indeed in my lifetime we have only reached this stage twice before, indeed since the semi-final in 2007-2008 we have not been past the 4th round! But that is all now consigned to history, and here we are standing at the precipice waiting to fight for our chance of our first silverware in 21 years .

Of course there is the small task of Manchester City standing in the way. Probably the best team in the league, but hey-ho, they say you have to beat the best to win things so why not?

So team news. What do we know?

We know that Joel Robles will return in goal after his excellent displays so far in this seasons cup competitions. Can he put in another man of the match performance that will finally see him get the nod over Tim Howard in the league? A lot of fans, myself included, would like to think so.

Apart from that I would anticipate very few changes from the team that drew with Spurs at the weekend.

Perhaps 2 changes that could happen would be the inclusion of Kevin Mirallas and Mo Besic. Mirallas seems to have a role to play at the club given what Martinez said at the pre-match press conference, and if he does play hopefully it will be with and not instead of Gerard Deulofeu. I feel that with Mirallas on the left and Deulofeu on the right it would give us a different dimension and make us more balanced. However given the importance of the tie playing both could be too much of a defensive risk.

Mo Besic is one who definitely deserves a chance after his appearance on Sunday swung the balance of the game in Everton’s favour. Indeed after he came of with his energy and quality there looked to be only one team that was going to snatch the game. If he does come in expect Cleverley to either make way or move wider.

For City we know they are missing Kompany who is a big miss but still posses enough quality to put out a very strong team.

City’s deputy ‘keeper Willy Caballero is also set to get a run out along with forward Kelechi Iheanacho.

You have to feel that if we are to have any chance of progressing we need to take a lead into the second leg in 3 weeks, but given our relative home and away form you wouldn’t write us off doing it the other way around!

Whatever happens let’s get behind the lads and make Goodison rock again!

Come on You Blues!
